Playing to your soft spot for slow-building love incantations as much as they are your inner-need for screaming guitar blasts, Bowery Beasts announce themselves boldly with their debut EP, Heavy You (released July 5 on Black Creem Records). In doing so, the Beasts make their voice known quickly, revealing a seasoned edge that ranges from fluid and unassuming to gritty and unapologetic.

Attributing a solid portion of their foundation to the past—particularly to some ‘80s hair bands, as well as to well-known punk and glam rock icons—the L.A.-based duo proves they can rock it just like some of their forebears once did, but that they’re no re-creation act that imitates its inspirations.

On the more rugged side of things, “White Diamond Babe” invokes the spirits of late-‘70s British punk stalwarts, with an array of grating guitar thrashes from Jordan Wiggins and resounding vocals fueled with intent. Marion Belle, who handles vocal duties, however, doesn’t merely stoke the fire on the five selections found on Heavy You. Displaying his versatile range, he also speaks through it in more hushed and patient tones, especially on the two strongest tracks, “Rock n Roll Queen” and “Amulet.”

The relaxing “Rock n Roll Queen,” which comes off as an ode to Southern California and its slow-moving ways, features buttery notes from Belle that carefully interweave an acoustic and piano jingle, creating an undoubtedly calming effect. Here and elsewhere on the EP, it doesn’t take much of a stretch to detect some Bowie influences, but the song remains original on the whole.

“Amulet” is the Beasts’ stab at a rock ballad. In a similar grain to “November Rain” and “Here I Go Again on My Own,” it quickly sends the signal that something major and dramatic is soon to come about. Though shorter and slightly toned down compared to some of the classic ballad megaliths, “Amulet” still fires away and brings about that desired sense of momentousness, doing so with sustained vocals and guitars squealing away their parts to draw out the grandiose notion.

For those who still have that thirst for straight ahead rockers that never hold back and keep things fresh and interesting, Heavy You should be a good place to start giving your ears what they seek.

TMBG “combine a Dadaist sensibility with smart hooks.”?
– The New Yorker? ?

They Might Be Giants new album, Join Us, is the recording that their fans have been waiting 20 years for! Impossibly catchy, sometimes strange and always original the album is a stunning return to form. On Join Us we find the Brooklyn originals have returned to rock and to their singular sensibility that made them an instant phenomenon in the world of alternative rock. Join Us is an electrifying mix of clever, maddeningly catchy songwriting and studio mastery. The album was created in the brand new private studio of their long-time collaborator Patrick Dillett (David Byrne, Mary J. Blige, Tegan and Sara, Doveman). Join Us will be released in all digital and physical outlets July 19, 2011 through Idlewild/Rounder Records.? ?

They Might Be Giants stopped by the AV Club headquarters in Chicago to perform a cover of Chumbawumba’s “Tubthumping”. The full band & a crowd of AV Club staff members, invited by the band to join in on the chorus, packed into the small round room where the sessions are taped. Watch the party song comes to life with They Might Be Giant’s Chumbawumba “Tubthumping” cover at AV Club’s “Undercover” session above.

They Might Be Giants have kicked off a video contest judged by John Hodgeman for their single “Can’t Keep Johnny Down”. For more information about the contest and prizes go to TMBG.com or watch the intro video made by the band. Download the “Can’t Keep Johnny Down” MP3 HERE.

/> “What were you thinking, starting fires? Were you just trying, to reach the stars?”

People start fires for a number of reasons. Sometimes for warmth, sometimes to be seen and very often, especially during this time of the year, to get a party started.

It is for all these reasons that Starting Fires, the second full-length from melodically-grandiose pop rockers hue, will soon garner lots of attention. Not only does their honest take on songwriting produce lyrics for all walks of life, but their crisp, joyous sound has the ability to turn heads and make a statement. Gather around everyone: Starting Fires is going to be the record that launches the career of hue and will get the Canadian music scene talking.

The five-piece act hail from Toronto via London, Ontario, though there is a striking quality to Starting Fires that represents the country they call home. Produced by Youtube phenomenon Mike Tompkins, there is also a diversity throughout Starting Fires. The opening rush of the piano-driven ‘You Will Be’ highlights the band’s atmospheric side, and ‘Colours You Would’ shows off the band’s ability to pen a comfortable, toe-tapping number. With the range of sounds available on Starting Fires, it’s no surprise that hue plans to perform extensively to promote the record.

Fires always have the ability to spread quickly, and likewise, there is no track on the record that doesn’t deserve to be shared amongst friends, family and eager music lovers. ‘Follow,’ a soon-to-be pop-rock classic hints at a maturity and confidence within the band’s voice that is sure to find its way to radio soon enough. ‘Rooftops,’ while still displaying a mature touch, is a groovy track that will be sure to get listeners through tough times while the rallying call of ‘The Bump,’ the album’s closer will leave listeners wanting more. Piano and keys are an important part of hue’s classic, radio-friendly vibe; it’s hard to believe that this record is only the band’s second. Surely, there is able warmth on Starting Fires, more than enough to spread around.

“Idealism and enthusiasm carry the day on song after uplifting song.” – London Free Press (top 10 album of 2007 for their sophomore release)

Having supported such Canada indie rock mainstays as We Are Wolves, The Wooden Sky, Two Hours Traffic, Said The Whale, Hollerado, Lights, and Mother Mother throughout their careers, it’s clear hue have been studying up on what makes not only a solid recording band but a formidable live act as well. Teaming up with Tompkins who also worked on Shad K’s Juno winning album allowed the band to expand their sound, both in content and instrumentation. Midway through the recording of hue’s album, Timbaland hired Tompkins to work on his latest project while he is the second most subscribed Canadian on Youtube with over 40 million views and second only to Justin Beiber.

There are many reasons to start a fire, and there are just as many to hear hue’s Starting Fires. Bold, uncompromising and eager to spread its wings, like many an eternal flame, hue will not be fading away anytime soon.

Many are undoubtedly uttering to themselves “about time, damn it” as they gaze upon this announcement with a sense of jovial relief – and about time indeed! Its been quite a journey for New York City’s own Penguin Prison who has flourished into one New York City’s finest and most championed disco-pop melody makers around.

Winning the hearts of top bloggers and securing continuous top placements on the hype machine countless times, selling out shows across America and Europe, not to mention a tour with Girl Talk, Jamiroquai and Two Door Cinema Club already, Penguin Prison sets his sights toward a very busy rest-of 2011, inking a recent deal with Downtown Records and a self-titled debut due to drop this Fall.

During such a tumultuous time in the music industry, Penguin Prison was in sure fire danger of falling victim to his own success. Success in the sense that fans and music lovers were flocking to shows and downloading tracks by the dozens, however it seemed to start steering interested professionals in the opposite direction as they shied away from the notion that fans actually do flock for quality and what they love regardless of a price tag, and people genuinely do adore Penguin Prison’s music.

Thankfully, Downtown Records stepped in, known for championing artists such as Miike Snow, Santigold, Cold War Kids and Duck Sauce. With a defiant approach and a belief in an artist that has been getting the dance floor moving since 2009, it only made sense to invite this pop pioneer to become part of their family.

Even if you never find out what a Penguin Prison is, there’s no denying Chris Glover aka Penguin Prison has made a brilliant record. If you’re a fan of New York disco, as accessible as it is angular, all burbling bass lines, resonant rhythms, shimmering synths and heavenly melodies, then you’ll love the new Penguin Prison album.

“I definitely wanted to make a pop album where every song was good and catchy and people could dance to it,” decides Chris, who aims to perform his songs all over the world like a strange little impish hybrid of Jackson and Prince. “It was hard work to make, but I tried to have fun. I made sure of that. If I didn’t jump around the room while I was recording a song, it didn’t make the cut. Fun is the key.”

Penguin was born, appropriately, at the dawn of electrofunk, in 1983 – the postdisco era of Peech Boys’ “Don’t Make Me Wait” and D Train’s “You’re The One For Me” – and grew up, an only child, on New York’s Upper East Side. He went on to become Penguin Prison at the start of 2009. It wasn’t long before he earned a reputation as remixer du jour for the likes of Marina and the Diamonds, Goldfrapp and Passion Pit. He agrees that he conferred NY kudos especially on the British artists, and admits his favorite remix was for Jamiroquai, adding that the secret to a good remix is “to throw everything away from the original track and start from scratch.”

It was inevitable that Chris would then make music of his own, which he began in late 2009. You can hear the spectacular results on the debut Penguin Prison album, which sounds to all intents and purposes like a Greatest Hits collection, so chock-full it is of catchy hooks and classic pop choruses.

Montreal-based musician and producer Miracle Fortress (aka Graham Van Pelt) has offered two unreleased tracks, “Gestures” and “Possession” for free mp3 download here. After wrapping up a successful North American tour with electro-pop duo Junior Boys (check out photos from BrooklynVegan), the band will embark on a European tour starting tomorrow behind their sophomore album, Was I The Wave? on Secret City Records (Diamond Rings, Plants and Animals).

Was I The Wave? noted by CMJ as “an evolution in the overall sound of the project” is the follow up to Van Pelt’s Polaris- Prize nominated debut, Five Roses, that received critical acclaim from SPIN, Paper, XLR8R and KEXP among others. Van Pelt comments in regards to the three year lapse between the two admitting, “The truth is that I did work on a great deal of material from 2008 to 2010 that never managed to find a home on any proper release. Some of it was intended for an ill-fated and ultimately discarded album…but some other material remains that I’d still like people to hear.” You can read more about his self-editing process at his recent interview with Filter Magazine.

Van Pelt will release a third single later this summer and will return to the states later this year. If you missed Miracle Fortress this time around, watch an amazing live performance they did of “Everything Works” for Montreal-based web-series Rock Ton.

“ …so genuine in its simple emotion that you can’t help but embrace it.”<br

“They’re a band that revels in the beauty of a simple melody delivered with minimal enhancement for maximum emotional effect…”
– Tucson Weekly

Four years and five national tours since the release of their last album, The Grownup Noise’s latest record, This Time With Feeling, has definitely proven itself to be worth the wait. Carefully blending elements of pop, folk and rock, the band bridges the gap between indie and Americana. The record was mixed in North Carolina by studio master Scott Solter (Spoon, Okkervil River). Fusing tranquil lyrics and harmonies with an assortment of orchestrated flourishes including cellos, pianos and accordions, all five members of The Grownup Noise are multi-instrumentalists.

The album opens with “Strawmen,” a lush arrangement that evokes feelings of peace and clarity. The playful “Six Foot Solemn Oath” immediately launches into a duet lead by intertwining piano and strings. “Carnival” lifts the tempo with a powerful folk-rock hook and lyrics that tell the tale of a magical love. Sorrowful lead single “The Artist Type” boasts an irresistible melody, expertly uniting gentle string arrangements and booming piano.

Check out “The Artist Type”

The Grownup Noise will kick off a national summer tour in support of This Time With Feeling. Described by the Portland Press Herald as combining “smart lyrics with keen vocals” and adding that “its songs are doses of melodic sunshine,” the Boston-based quintet offer a kinetic, emotional warmth. Catch them live in your city!

“Messersmith’s voice is an airy, whispery kind of instrument, his singing is as clear as a piece of cut
crystal.” – NPR

“His songs seem to remind us that for every bit of rottenness that is out there… there are so many more flashes of incredible beauty. – Daytrotter

Messersmith’s newest album and final installment of a trilogy, The Reluctant Graveyard, was featured as one of NPR’s Best Albums of 2010.
